As a parish church we try to make links with local agencies and charities serving local people. Here are some of the things we support:
Food for hungry people
We make a weekly collection of food, toiletries and other essential items, which are then distributed to three local food charities: Dads House Food Bank; St Cuthbert’s Centre and Glass Door Homeless Charity. We welcome donations every day, and items can be left in boxes at the back of the church.
Sleep out for Glass Door
Each year members of our community take part in the annual Glass Door Sleep Out in October, seeking sponsorship from friends, family and other supporters, to raise funds for the Winter Night Shelters.
The Second Half Club – support for the over-50s
Each Friday morning in term time, we offer hospitality and a chance for older people to meet one another over coffee and snacks, and to take part in exercise sessions run by Open Age. Anyone over 50 is welcome, though the space for exercise is limited.
Reading Support
A group of around 18 volunteers go into St Cuthbert with St Matthias School each week. The school is situated just outside the Parish on the Warwick Road, near the Earls Court Tube Station. About half the volunteers are members of St Mary’s and many others are friends of parishioners.
Most of the children at the school have English as an additional language and come from families of many different faiths. The volunteers work individually with each child – spending around an hour a week listening to the children reading, helping with difficult vocabulary and asking questions to make sure that the children understand what they are reading.
Charitable Giving
Almsgiving is a Christian duty which we take seriously. See our Charitable Giving page to find out about how we raise funds for other charities, both local and international.
